My Aladdin Collection - Yellow Vertique Model B (1938)

Introducing the 5th vintage lamp in my collection...

Representing the Model B Vertiques: YELLOW MOONSTONE (B-88)

The Vertiques were produced in 1938 - the same time as the Beehives (as well as some others). They only came in 4 colors, but one color is especially unique. The yellow Vertique contains Uranium oxide. Because of this, the yellow lamp will glow when you put it under a blacklight!

The Vertiques are known for their thin vertical lines on their font. They have a similar connector (connecting the font to the foot) that is found on the Corinthians and the Diamond Quilts.

My New Lamp
Now THIS lamp was a very exciting find! I was so happy to find this lamp font in great condition. I'm not normally a huge fan of the color yellow, but I love this lamp...and for a yellow, it's actually quite pretty! In different lights it turns from a pale yellow into a rather dark shade of yellow. Unfortunately, it did not come with a burner, so I had to find and buy one separately to make the lamp "complete". Now, I just need to get a chimney, but I'm not too worried about that since I most likely won't be able to display the lamp with the chimney on anyway.

I could not wait to get this lamp and try out the blacklight. When it arrived, I wasted no time in taking the lamp and my blacklight flashlight to the closet (the darkest "room" I could find). The results were even better than I had hoped for! Pictures of what it might look like pale in comparison to seeing the real thing. The photos I took actually came out pretty cool.

So, without further ado, below are the "normal" pictures of the Yellow Vertique, followed by the totally groovy -and not enhanced or modified in any way - glowing blacklight pictures. Enjoy!

My Aladdin Collection - Alacite Simplicity Model B (1948)

Introducing the 4th vintage lamp in my collection...

Representing the Model B Simplicities: ALACITE (B-76A)

I knew that I wanted an Alacite lamp for my collection. There are only a couple of models that were made with Alacite - the Simplicity and the very popular Tall and Short Lincoln Drapes. Alacite is a special material that was discovered by Aladdin, and it is an ivory-like opal glass material. They called their discovery"Alacite" as a combination of the Aladdin name and the popular suffix "cite" used for minerals and natural stones. Before WWII, Alacite was used with Uranium oxide as a coloring agent. Those lamps will glow under a blacklight. Sadly, this lamp was made post-war, so it does not glow (I tried it just in case). Stay tuned for my next post about a lamp that DOES glow!

B-76A Plain Ivory Alacite

My New Lamp
The Alacite Simplicity is simply beautiful! I absolutely love this lamp! It is so classic-looking. After finding and studying this lamp, I now realize that the table lamp I spotted in the show Copper was most likely this very lamp! It has a very distinct, sleek, "simple" look, and I'm quite sure that I've found the match. I think it's pretty cool to have the same lamp they used as a prop (albeit very inaccurately - read my post about it).

My Aladdin Collection - Model 7 Brass Table Lamp (1917-1919)

Introducing the 3rd vintage lamp in my collection...

Representing Model 7: SATIN BRASS (701)

The next lamp added to my collection is the stunning Model 7. The Model 7 dates back to between 1917 and 1919. That's 100 (or almost) years ago! Pretty awesome!

Fun Fact: The Model 7 is the first model that all parts are true Aladdin! Previous models used tooling that was designed for other lamps. The lamp font and burner were all original Aladdin designs.

My New Lamp
This lamp is beautiful, but unfortunately, I'm guessing that the finish has been re-plated. They say it is rare to find a lamp with the original finish, which is understandable given their age. The Model 7 and Model 8 lamps look very similar and are very easy to distinguish from Models 1-6 and 9-12. Their fonts are larger and much more ornate. I'm glad to have found a nice looking one to add to my collection.

My Aladdin Collection - Model 12 Nickel Table Lamp w/ Slant-Side (1928-1935)

Introducing the 2nd vintage lamp in my collection...

Representing Model 12: NICKEL SLANT-SIDE (1200)

The next lamp added to my collection goes back a few years before my Beehive. The Model 12 was produced between 1928 and 1935. I don't think there is any way to know more exactly when my lamp was made. Model 12s were made with either straight sides (early) or slant sides (later). I haven't been able to find production dates, but I did read that it was thought that lamps were only made with straight sides during the first year of production, because there aren't very many of them found. The Model 12 that I bought has slant sides, so it is likely that it was made somewhere between 1929 and 1935. Unfortunately, that doesn't really narrow it down very much.

The Model 12 was produced during a transition period. This model has the honor of some distinguishing "firsts" and "lasts." Model 12 was the first lamp to switch from the smooth, heel-less chimney to the new lox-on style. The mantle was switched to the new lox-on style as well, replacing the old KoneKap style. Model 12 was also the last model with a center draft tube; all lamps that came after (and all current models) are considered "side-draft".

My New Lamp
I was really excited to get this lamp because of its center draft tube. I have only ever seen one lamp in person with a center draft tube and that was when I got to visit the Aladdin headquarters in Clarksville, TN. I really love the finish on this lamp.

My Aladdin Collection - Ruby Beehive Model B (1938)

Introducing the very 1st vintage lamp in my collection...

Representing the Model B Beehives: RUBY BEEHIVE (B-83)

One of the very first Aladdin lamp styles that caught my eye several years ago was the Beehive. The Beehive style is a Model B that was produced between 1937-1938. The Beehives are named as such because of the horizontal lines on the font. It is a very unique pattern, as many lamps have lines that are vertical.

Model - B
Year Produced - 1938
Font/Burner - Side Draft
Chimney - Lox-on

Beehive Lamp Styles
B-80 Clear Crystal
B-81 Green Crystal
B-82 Amber Crystal [dark "bottle brown" and light "olive-green"]
B-83 Ruby Crystal
B-84 White Moonstone

My New Lamp
I don't know what it is about this style, but I just think it is so cool and so beautiful. This style really got me interested in the older lamp styles and I knew that one day I would love to have one for myself.

I wasn't specifically looking for this lamp to be the first of my collection, but there she was! Absolutely stunning and in GREAT condition! Aside from the VERY rare and elusive white moonstone, the ruby is the most sought after by collectors. I was ecstatic to win the bid on this gorgeous lamp. It also came with a white N5501 shade, but I really just wanted the lamp. The shade is a true Aladdin, but it is a reproduction and not an original. It was very fitting that the first lamp style I fell in love with turned out to be the first in my collection. The hardest thing now is that I still want all the other colors as well! Maybe some day, when I get one from every style, I will start on duplicates.

My Aladdin Lamp Obsession (and Collection) is Growing!

The journey to create my very own Aladdin lamp collection...

I finally couldn't fight the temptation any longer. I just had to officially start my Aladdin lamp collection! Now, yes, I did currently have 2 lamps - an Amethyst Lincoln Drape (Model 23A) that was a gift and a Clear Genie III (MAXbrite). Techinically, you could call that a collection, but those are modern lamps. I really wanted some old lamps (OK, maybe a lot!). My original 2 lamps have both been used during power outages, but all of the ones I am planning to add to my collection will be just for display. Update (3/14/18): I've added a 3rd modern lamp, the Deluxe Brass Table Lamp (MAXbrite) that has oil and is ready to burn!

So, I got myself the Aladdin Collectors Manual and Price Guide (#23 updated in July of 2017) and my trusty Aladdin - The Magic Name in Lamps book and I was ready to go! These are ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVES if you want to collect Aladdin lamps and accessories. The information in these two resources is invaluable and incredibly helpful (as well as super interesting...at least to me).

If you want to start collecting from scratch, like me, I thought I would describe how I decided to go about it, as it might be helpful to you as well. I wanted to have a diverse collection with as many different styles as I could find. That meant (at least for now) selecting just one color or finish for each style. I didn't want to end up with a lot of the same color, so I decided to have a very calculated approach and have a tentative plan in mind so that I didn't end up wishing I would have waited for a different color to come along. It is way too tempting to just buy the first lamp in a certain style I find when getting started.

To start, I created a list of lamp styles I wanted in the order I wanted to find them. Then for each style, I ranked the colors and/or finishes produced for each style. My rankings started with the highest value (which also happened to line up with the ones I liked the best in most cases). As I started picking colors to vary the collection, I did rank some higher just because I already ranked the same color high for another style. I feel pretty good about how I have ranked the lamps. If I can find what I'm looking for, I will have a nice variety of colors and finishes!

Right now, the only place I am looking is on eBay. That might change after awhile, but for right now, this is just super easy. There are just so many options, and they are all so tempting, but I do have to remember that I have to have room for everything I get. Being patient is the hardest thing because I know it's going to be hard to find some of the earliest models, dating back to 1909. It's also really hard to be picky and hold out for lamps in better condition or a better price - but I'm trying!

If you are interested, stay tuned because I will be documenting each new lamp to my collection in upcoming posts! So come with me on my journey of being an official Aladdin collector. Soon you can call me an Aladdin Knight...my membership is in the mail! Anyone can become a member - click here! Update: it's official - I'm a Knight! If you have any suggestoins for a cute handle, I'm open to suggestions :)

I've had so much fun furthering my research and continuing to dig deeper into the fascinating history of Aladdin lamps. Not only do I find it all so interesting and intriguing, but it will all be useful in my Aladdin lamp training at work. I think everyone will enjoy being able to see some of the older lamps and parts to help assist customers. The training I've had myself definitely comes in handy with identifying lamps and parts to add to my collection. It's definitely a win-win!!
