Seinfeld References #63 & 64

April 25, 2013: Seinfeld Reference #63

Stressful times call for the proven method of anger management: "SERENITY NOW!!" This was used by Mark today, after a particularly stressful training session.

At lunch today, we were talking about running out of gas. Allen said his dad ran out of gas the other day and he said he really thought he could make it, even though he had been running on "E" for days. This reminded me of the episode where Kramer test drives a car and tries to see how far he can go beyond the slash.

Music Ironicness: My American Heart - Boys! Grab Your Guns

Today's ironic son of the day is from My American Heart and it's called "Boys! Grab Your Guns". This week in the news, there was a horrific bombing at the Boston Marathon, and today the suspects went on a rampage and the Boston PD and the FBI have been on a manhunt all day. The suspects have shot and killed and used explosives. It's so ironic that this song would play today, and the fact that the name of the group is My American Heart...America's heart has been bleeding for a week from the devastation.

The day of our employee recognition banquet, Heather was sick. She was supposed to be Verna White (as in Vanna White) in our gameshow-themed entertainment. We now had to find a last minute replacement. Some of us thought that Bruce would make a funny replacement because he's so silly. We made a joke about what he would wear, and we joked about a backless dress...like the one George wanted his girlfriend to wear to the ball. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a video clip of the whole story, but this is Kramer who ends up making the "backless dress" twirl into the ball.

Today at lunch, somehow we were talking about funerals and caskets (grim for a lunch conversation I know...I'm not sure how the topic came up). But it reminded me of a clip of Jerry's stand-up, where he was talking about how funerals are like moving because only your close friends could help you with a move like that and once you find the perfect box, it's too late because you're being buried in it.

Here is the transcript since the clip cuts off the last couple seconds...and the punchline :(

"When You're moving your whole world becomes boxes. That's all you think about is
boxes. Boxes, where are there boxes? You just wander down the street going in and out of stores. Are there boxes here? Have you seen any boxes? I mean it's all you think about. You can't even talk to people because you can't concentrate. Shut up I'm looking for boxes. Just after a while you become like really into it you can smell them. You walk into a store. There's boxes here. Don't tell me you don't have boxes. Dammit, I can SMELL them. I'm like I'm obsessed. I love the smell of cardboard in the morning. You could be at a funeral. Everyone's mourning crying around, and your looking at the casket. That's a nice box Does anyone know where that guy got that box? When he's done with it do you think I could get that? It's got some nice handles on it. And that's what death is really. It's the last big move of your life. The hearse is like the van. The pall bearers are your close friends the only ones you could ask to help you with a big move like that. And the casket is that great perfect box you've been waiting for your whole life The only problem is, once you find it you're in it."

Music Ironicness: Muse - Madness

Today was an incredibly stressful day at work, filled with tediously detailed note making on spreadsheets to document procedures with our new software. After just about 8 hours straight, my mind is like mush! I can't think clearly about anything. So, as I'm leaving work, I get into my car, and the first song that I hear on the radio is Muse's "Madness"...madness is exactly what I felt like I was slipping into. 'Mad' is what the software was making me...

Music Ironicness: The Fray - Munich

Yesterday, I watched the movie Munich with Eric Bana and Daniel Craig. It's about the shootings and hostage situation at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich.

Today, I'm listening to my random playlist on Google Play, and the song Munich by The Fray comes on. So weird!

Rob Cesternino - Twitter

Rob Cesternino is a former Survivor contestant. He competed on Season 6: Amazon, and came in 3rd. He's a huge reality TV show fan and he has a website, blog, podcast and more in which he discusses all things Survivor, Big Brother, etc. Today he was discussing something that happened on Big Brother Canada. I made a comment on his tweet and he then Favorited it. Below is his original tweet and my comment.

A little backstory on his tweet and what his article was about, so that my comment makes more sense:

During the after hours of the show, we get to see "behind the scenes" goings-on. Often "Big Brother" talks to the houseguests. Sometimes he will tell them to "please stop talking about production."  So, since Rob was talking about production, I thought it would be funny to tell him to "stop talking about production."

We're doing a game show theme for our employee recognition banquet this year, and we're in the planning stages right now. We are going to be doing versions of Family Feud and The Price is Right. Today as we were discussing ways to set up the games, I was reminded of the time that Kramer moved the discarded Merv Griffin set into his apartment and held "shows" with Newman, Jerry, Elaine and George. He asked them questions and even had a tape playing the theme music.
